In an unexpected
move, rebels who had been camped outside of
the capital city Monrovia lauched a withering
offensive onto the city July 19. Government
forces, mostly a rag-tag collection of child
soldiers, were unable to contain the attack
and fell back to positions in the city center,
where a fierce three-week standoff ensued.
